Lawn Mower Battery

Most riding mowers, lawn tractors and zero-turns built in the last thirty years start on the same battery: a 12-volt Group U1, the little brick under the seat of the John Deere, Husqvarna and Toro tractors on the block. Lead-acid U1s die the same way every time, sitting through a winter. A lithium lawn mower battery in the same case holds its charge from October to April, cranks two to three times harder, weighs a quarter as much, and never needs water, a tender or a jump from the truck. Spell it lawnmower battery or lawn mower battery, it is the same 12-volt U1 brick, and this is the shelf for it.

What a Lawn Mower Battery Actually Has to Do

A mower battery has one job and a hard calendar. It cranks a 15 to 30 horsepower single or V-twin a few dozen times a season, spends the rest of the year parked, and is asked to start on the first warm Saturday in spring after five months of doing nothing. Lead-acid hates that schedule. It self-discharges on the shelf, sulfates as it sits, and the 25-pound riding lawn mower battery you bought in May is a doorstop by the following April. A LiFePO4 pack in the same Group U1 case fixes the calendar: it loses a few percent over a winter instead of most of its charge, delivers 850 to 925 cranking amps against 230 to 350 for lead-acid, and weighs about seven pounds. It is the last 12 volt lawn mower battery most owners will buy for that machine.

Two things to check before you order a battery for tractor lawn mower use. First, the terminals: a U1 has the positive post on the left as you face the battery, a U1R has it on the right, and the cables on the mower only reach one way. Second, the charger: the mower’s own charging system is fine, but the trickle charger or tender you hang on it over winter has to have a lithium mode, because the desulfation pulses built for lead-acid are hard on lithium cells. Call 888-274-7544 with the make and model and we will tell you which side your positive is on and whether your charger will do.

Lawn Mower Battery FAQ

Will a lithium lawn mower battery fit my John Deere, Cub Cadet or Craftsman?+

If your mower takes a Group U1 or U1R, yes: most of the lithium packs we carry are built to the BCI U1 case size, and John Deere lists a U1 for its whole riding line. Cub Cadet’s current XT and Ultima models and Hustler’s Raptor X, XL, XD and Dash XD take a smaller battery, and we carry lithium sized for those too, on the Cub Cadet and Hustler pages. Read the label on your old battery, check which side the positive terminal is on (U1 is left, U1R is right as you face the battery), and call us at 888-274-7544 with the model if you are not sure.

What is the difference between a U1 and a U1R lawn mower battery?+

Only the terminal layout. Face the battery with the terminals nearest you: a U1 has the positive post on the left, a U1R has it on the right. The cables on your mower reach one way, so match the letter printed on your old battery.

Will my mower charge a lithium battery?+

Yes. Mower charging systems regulate to about 14 volts, which is what a LiFePO4 pack wants. The thing to replace is the winter tender: use a charger or maintainer with a lithium mode, never a lead-acid charger with a desulfation setting.

Does a lithium lawn mower battery start in the cold?+

Yes, with one habit: turn the key on for about 30 seconds before you crank on a cold morning, so the small load wakes the cells. The pack will not take a charge below freezing, so if the mower winters in an unheated shed, bring the battery inside or leave it disconnected; it will hold its charge either way.

Is a lawnmower battery 12 volt?+

Yes, on every riding mower, lawn tractor and zero-turn built since the 1990s: a 12 volt Group U1 or U1R. A healthy lithium lawnmower battery reads about 13.2 to 13.4 volts at rest and 14 volts or so with the engine running. Push mowers with electric start use a small 12V pack too; walk-behind cordless mowers run 40 to 80V tool batteries, which is a different product from what this shelf carries.

What does RE-START mean on a lawn mower battery?+

The Antigravity packs we carry shut themselves off before they go completely flat and hold back a starting reserve. Press the button on the keyfob remote and the battery wakes up and starts the mower, no jumper cables and no charger, even after a winter of sitting.
