12 Volt Trolling Motor Battery

A 12 volt trolling motor battery runs the motors up to about 55 pounds of thrust on kayaks, jon boats and small consoles. In lithium it is one pack that drops into the lead-acid battery’s place at about a third of the weight, and it holds full thrust until it is nearly empty instead of fading all afternoon. Everything below is a single 12V battery, ready to connect.

Sizing a 12V Trolling Battery

Amps times hours is the whole calculation. Kayak and jon boat motors at a fishing pace draw 15 to 25 amps, so a 54 to 60Ah lithium pack covers a half day to a full day of casual fishing. A 55 pound motor run hard pulls 40 to 50 amps, which is why all-day boats step up to 100Ah. Lithium gives you nearly all of its rated capacity, where a lead-acid battery of the same rating is safely good for about half.

For kayaks and jon boats, the Dakota Lithium 12V 54Ah and the Bluetooth-monitored Ionic 12V 60Ah are the light, simple answer. All-day boats step to the Ionic 12V 100Ah or the Dakota Lithium 12V 100Ah Heated, whose self-warming cells keep cold-water seasons charging. Boats that start an outboard from the same battery take the Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V 135Ah, a dual purpose pack with 1,000 cranking amps. Running a bigger motor? 12 Volt Trolling Motor Battery FAQ

What size battery do I need for a 12V trolling motor?+

For kayaks and jon boats fishing at a relaxed pace, a 54 to 60Ah lithium pack covers a half day to a full day. For a 55 pound motor run hard, or for all-day trips, choose 100Ah. Lithium delivers nearly its full rating, so a 100Ah lithium pack does the work of a lead-acid battery about twice its size.

How long will a 100Ah lithium battery run a 12V trolling motor?+

About five hours at 20 amps, a typical fishing pace, and around two hours flat out on a 55 pound motor drawing 50 amps. A kayak motor at slow speed drawing 10 to 15 amps runs most of a long day on a full 100Ah pack.

Can I put a lithium battery on my existing 12V trolling motor?+

Yes. A 12V lithium pack connects to the same two motor leads, through the same breaker, as the lead-acid battery it replaces. Charge it with a lithium (LiFePO4) charger; a lead-acid charger may never fully charge it. Our trolling motor chargers all carry the right profile.
