Trolling Motor Battery

A trolling motor battery has one measure: does the motor pull as hard at 4 PM as it did at first light. Lead-acid fades all day; lithium does not. We carry lithium trolling motor batteries for 12V, 24V and 36V systems, from kayak-sized packs to all-day tournament banks, every one a deep cycle LiFePO4 built for thousands of charge cycles.

12V, 24V or 36V: Read the Motor First

Your motor decides the bank, not the other way around. Motors up to about 55 pounds of thrust run 12V, which covers most kayaks, jon boats and small consoles. The 68 to 80 pound class runs 24V, and the 100-pound-plus tournament motors on bass boats run 36V. Match the battery bank to the voltage printed on the motor, then build it from series-wired 12V packs: two in series for a 24 volt trolling motor battery bank, three for 36V. Wire in matched capacities from the same brand and the bank behaves like one big battery.

How Big a Battery Do You Need

Amps times hours is the whole science. A motor cruising at around 20 amps for four hours costs 80Ah, which a 100Ah lithium covers with margin, and which flattens a “100Ah” lead-acid battery because only about half of a lead battery is safely usable. Kayak and jon boat motors sipping 15 to 25 amps do a full day on a 54 to 60Ah pack. If you fish long days or run wide open between spots, step up: capacity you did not use is a battery that lasted, capacity you needed and did not have is a paddle.

In the Store Today

The trolling shelf is stocked and shipping now. For kayaks and jon boats, the Dakota Lithium 12V 54Ah and the Bluetooth-monitored Ionic 12V 60Ah carry a full day of casual fishing at a third the weight of the lead they replace. All-day boats step to the Ionic 12V 100Ah or the Dakota Lithium 12V 100Ah Heated, whose self-warming cells keep cold-water seasons charging. And for one-battery boats, the Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V 135Ah is the dual purpose answer: 1,000 cranking amps to start the outboard, 135Ah of deep cycle to troll the rest of the day. Every pack ships free from our US warehouses with its full manufacturer warranty, Dakota’s famous 11-year included.

Trolling Motor Battery FAQ

What battery do I need for a 24 volt trolling motor?+

Two matched 12V lithium batteries wired in series, same brand and same capacity. Two 100Ah packs in series make a 24V 100Ah bank, which is the standard setup for 68 to 80 pound thrust motors. Wire the positive of one to the negative of the other, and the motor leads take the two open terminals. Call us at 888-274-7544 if the wiring diagram is the part in the way.

Can I run my trolling motor off a starting battery?+

No. A starting battery is built for one short burst of amps, and trolling drains it deep enough to ruin it inside a season. The trolling job belongs to a deep cycle battery. If your boat only has room for one, choose a true dual purpose lithium like the Dakota DL+, which carries real cranking amps and 135Ah of deep cycle capacity in the same case.

Do lithium trolling motor batteries really run twice as long?+

Roughly, yes, size for size. A lead-acid battery should only be drained to about half its rating, and its voltage sags all day, which you feel as thrust. LiFePO4 delivers 80 to 100 percent of its rating at flat voltage, so a 100Ah lithium does about the work of a 200Ah pair of lead batteries, at a quarter of the weight on your bow.

Is a 54 or 60Ah battery enough for a kayak trolling motor?+

Yes for most kayak and canoe motors, which draw 15 to 25 amps at cruising speed. A 54Ah lithium covers roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours of continuous cruise, and since nobody trolls nonstop, that stretches across a full day of real fishing. It also weighs around 17 pounds, which your kayak notices.
