Travel Trailer Battery

A travel trailer battery lives in a plastic box on the A-frame, next to the propane, and it has one job: run the trailer when the truck is unhooked and the campground has no post. We carry the lithium battery for travel trailer use that drops into that box: 12V LiFePO4 in group 24, 27 and 31 cases from 100Ah to 460Ah, a third the weight of the lead-acid it replaces, with all of its rated capacity usable and no water to check. One 12V lithium replaces the pair of 6-volt golf cart batteries most bigger trailers ship with.

The Battery Box on the Tongue Sets the Rules

Every travel trailer battery decision starts with the box the factory bolted to the A-frame. It is sized for one group 24 or 27, sometimes a group 31, and on larger rigs for two 6-volt GC2s wired in series. Whatever goes in has to fit that footprint, sit on the tongue where every pound counts against the hitch rating, and take a trickle from the seven-pin plug while you tow. A 12V lithium in the same group size does all three better than lead: a group 27 lithium weighs 25 to 30 pounds against 60 for the flooded battery it replaces, and a 100Ah lithium gives you 100Ah, where a 100Ah lead-acid gives you 50 before it starts wearing out.

What Size Battery a Travel Trailer Needs

Add up a night: LED lights, the water pump, the furnace fan on a cold night, the 12V fridge if you have one, the phones. For most travel trailers that comes to 40 to 70Ah a day, so a single 12 volt battery for travel trailer duty at 100Ah covers a weekend with margin, and the 130 to 150Ah packs cover a long one. Boondockers and anyone running a fridge around the clock step to 200Ah, either one big battery or two 100Ah in parallel, and the 460Ah-class single battery replaces an entire bank of six-volt pairs. Because a travel trailer deep cycle battery in LiFePO4 can be run to 80 or 100 percent of its rating, the 100Ah lithium does the work of a 200Ah lead-acid pair while weighing less than one of them.

Charging From the Truck, the Post and the Sun

The seven-pin connector was designed to keep a lead-acid battery topped up, not to charge a bank; it will hold a lithium up on a long drive and little more. A DC-DC charger mounted on the trailer side turns the tow vehicle’s alternator into a proper 20 to 40 amp lithium charger while you drive. On shore power the trailer’s converter needs a lithium profile, since lead-acid programs stop short and leave capacity unused; anything in our charger lineup with a LiFePO4 setting does the job, and many converters made since 2020 have a lithium switch. Solar needs nothing beyond a controller with a lithium setting. Lithium discharges fine below freezing but should not be charged until the cells are above about 32°F, so trailers that camp in winter look at a heated pack.

We stock travel trailer lithium from Dakota Lithium, EPOCH and Ionic alongside the rest of our RV battery lineup, with the camper and motorhome shelves one click away. Every pack carries its full manufacturer warranty and ships from one of our U.S. warehouses closest to you.

Travel Trailer Battery FAQ

What size battery do I need for a travel trailer?+

Most travel trailers use 40 to 70Ah a day, so a single 12V 100Ah lithium covers a weekend with margin and 130 to 150Ah covers a long one. Running a 12V fridge around the clock or boondocking for a week wants 200Ah, as one battery or two 100Ah in parallel. Match the group size to your tongue box, 24, 27 or 31, or call 888-274-7544 and we will size it with you.

What is the best battery for a travel trailer?+

A 12V LiFePO4 deep cycle battery in the group size your tongue box takes. It weighs a third of the lead-acid it replaces, gives you all of its rated capacity, needs no water and holds a charge through a winter of storage without a tender. Add Bluetooth if you want to check the bank from the truck seat, and a heated pack if you camp below freezing.

Is a travel trailer battery 12 volt?+

Yes. Every travel trailer runs a 12 volt house system. Smaller trailers ship with one 12V group 24 or 27 battery; bigger ones ship with two 6-volt golf cart batteries wired in series to make 12V. One 12V lithium replaces either setup with the same terminals, and at a fraction of the weight.

When should I replace my travel trailer battery?+

A lead-acid trailer battery usually lasts two to four seasons, less if it sat discharged over a winter. The signs are lights that dim by midnight and a furnace fan that quits early. A lithium replacement is rated for 3,000 to 5,000 cycles, which is decades of weekends, and for storage you leave it charged and switched off at the disconnect. It loses only a few percent a month sitting.
