Dirt Bike Battery Charger

Electric-start dirt bikes and dual sports ask a lot of a small battery, and a lithium one should be charged on a lithium profile. A dirt bike battery charger for LiFePO4 is a small 12V unit, and its size matters: many dirt bike batteries are under 7Ah, so check your battery’s maximum charge current and pick a charger at or below it.

Small Battery, Small Charger

Dirt bike batteries are tiny by design, and tiny batteries want gentle charging. The number that matters is the battery’s maximum charge current, printed on the label or in the manual. At 3 amps or more, the Dakota 12V 3A charges it on the LiFePO4 profile Dakota specifies; the Dakota 4.5Ah battery we carry, for example, takes up to 4.5 amps. Between rides a lithium battery barely self-discharges, so charge it before the bike goes away for the season and it will start in spring. Need the battery? See our dirt bike batteries.

Dirt Bike Battery Charger FAQ

My dirt bike battery is under 7Ah. Can I use a 3A charger?+

Check the battery’s label or manual for its maximum charge current. If it is 3 amps or more, yes. The Dakota 4.5Ah battery we carry, for example, takes up to 4.5 amps.

How long does a dirt bike battery take to charge?+

About the amp hours divided by the charger’s amps. A flat 4.5Ah battery takes about an hour and a half on 3 amps.

Do I need a trickle charger over the off-season?+

Usually not with lithium. LiFePO4 loses only a few percent of charge a month. Charge it to full before storage and again in spring. If you do keep a maintainer on it, it must have a lithium mode.
