12V Lawn Mower Battery
Riding mowers, lawn tractors and zero turns with gas engines all start on a 12-volt battery, and most of them take the same Group U1 or U1R case. A 12V lawn mower battery in lithium does the job better than lead-acid: more cranking power, a fraction of the weight, and a charge that is still there after a winter of sitting.

Are Lawn Mower Batteries 6V or 12V?
12 volts, on every modern riding mower, lawn tractor and zero turn. A few vintage tractors ran 6-volt systems, and walk-behind mowers with electric start use small 12-volt packs of their own. Battery-powered mowers run 40 to 80-volt tool batteries, which are a different product entirely.
What changes from mower to mower is the case. Most take a Group U1 or U1R, about 7.7 x 5.2 x 7.2 inches; the letter is the terminal side, positive on the left for a U1 and on the right for a U1R as you face the posts. Some newer tractors, like Cub Cadet’s XT series, ship with a smaller AGM, so read the label on the old battery before you order a 12V riding lawn mower battery. For charging, any charger with a lithium mode works, like the 12V lawn mower battery charger we carry.
12V Lawn Mower Battery FAQ
Are lawn mower batteries 12V?+-
Yes. Every modern riding mower, lawn tractor and zero turn starts on a 12-volt battery, most of them a Group U1 or U1R. A healthy lithium 12V battery reads about 13.2 to 13.4 volts at rest.
Can I use a car battery in a riding lawn mower?+-
Usually not. A car battery is the same 12 volts but a much bigger case, so it will not fit the mower’s tray or hold-down, and its weight and posts rarely line up with the mower’s cables. Use the Group U1 or U1R size your mower was built for.
What charger do I need for a 12V lithium lawn mower battery?+-
A 12V charger with a lithium (LiFePO4) mode, which charges to about 14.4 volts and then stops. A small 3-amp unit, like the 12V lawn mower battery charger we carry, is plenty for a mower battery.
