24 Volt Trolling Motor Battery

A 24 volt trolling motor battery runs the 68 to 80 pound thrust motors on most bass boats and bay boats. In lithium it comes two ways: one 24V battery with nothing to wire, or a set of two matched 12V batteries that you connect in series. Everything below is a complete 24V bank, holds full thrust to the last cast, and weighs about a third of the lead-acid pair it replaces.

Two Batteries, One 24V Bank

Trolling motors in the 68 to 80 pound class draw 40 to 55 amps at full throttle and around 20 at a fishing cruise, split across two batteries in series. Two 100Ah lithium packs make a 24V 100Ah bank that covers a full day of real fishing with margin, where the same “100Ah” in lead-acid gives up by early afternoon because only about half of a lead battery is safely usable and its voltage sags as it drains. The lithium bank also drops roughly 80 pounds off the bow, which the boat feels on plane.

Wiring a 24V Series Bank

Series wiring is one jumper: the positive terminal of battery one to the negative terminal of battery two. The motor’s positive lead goes to the open positive on battery two and its negative lead to the open negative on battery one, with the motor’s breaker in the positive lead. Use two identical packs bought together so the BMS in each sees the same load, and charge them with a two-bank lithium charger that treats each 12V pack separately. Every pack we sell for series use is rated for it by its maker; call us at 888-274-7544 if the wiring diagram is the part in the way.

24 Volt Trolling Motor Battery FAQ

Can I use two different batteries in a 24V trolling bank?+

No. Series banks want identical packs: same brand, same capacity, ideally bought together. Mismatched packs drain unevenly and the weaker one trips its BMS first, which shuts the whole bank down mid-cast.

Do I need a special charger for a 24V lithium bank?+

You need a lithium-profile charger that charges each 12V pack on its own bank; a two-bank onboard charger is the clean answer and keeps both packs balanced. Charging the series pair as one 24V battery works only with a 24V lithium charger and well-matched packs.

How many amp hours do I need for a 24 volt trolling motor?+

A 24V 100Ah lithium bank, two 100Ah packs in series, covers a full day for most 68 to 80 pound motors. Tournament anglers who run wide open between spots step to 24V 135Ah or more. Sixty amp-hour pairs suit half days and the smaller motors in the class.
