Why the year matters on this one

The GS450T is a motorcycle where the battery changed mid-run: 1981 to 1982 takes the YB10L-A2 and 1983 to 1984 the YB12B-B2. The plate above names the source for each year, and the table shows every run we have on file, so match the year to the case before you order.

For 1983 to 1984 that means the Ionic S4: 500 cranking amps, 3.3 pounds, the same case in lithium. Charge it with a lithium-compatible charger or maintainer for the off-season and it outlasts the lead-acid battery it replaces by years.

What size battery does a Suzuki GS450T take?+
It depends on the year: 1981 to 1982 takes the YB10L-A2 and 1983 to 1984 the YB12B-B2. For 1983 to 1984 that is the Ionic S4, the lithium drop-in for the YB12B-B2 case. The table above shows every run we have on file, so match your year to the case before you order.
Will a lithium battery work in a GS450T without changes?+
Yes, on a bike with a healthy charging system: the lithium battery uses the same case, the same posts and the same cables, and it drops in where the lead-acid battery sat. Bikes older than about 2000 should have their voltage regulator and rectifier checked first, since a failing one overcharges any battery and lithium tolerates it less. Fill any gap in the tray with the foam spacers most lithium motorcycle batteries include.
Do I need a different charger for a lithium motorcycle battery?+
Use a charger or maintainer with a lithium (LiFePO4) mode. A lead-acid trickle charger can push the wrong voltage profile, and a desulfation mode can damage a lithium pack. A lithium-profile maintainer over the off-season keeps it topped without harm, and the battery loses only a few percent of charge a month sitting on its own.
