Why the year matters on this one

The DR250S is a dirt bike where the battery changed mid-run: 1990 to 1992 takes the YTX4L-BS and 1993 to 1995 the YTX7L-BS. The plate above names the source for each year, and the table shows each run, so match the year to the case before you order.

For 1993 to 1995 that means the Dakota Lithium 12V 4.5Ah: 350 cranking amps, 1.5 pounds, the same case in lithium. Charge it with a lithium-compatible charger or maintainer for the off-season and it outlasts the lead-acid battery it replaces by years.

What size battery does a Suzuki DR250S take?+
It depends on the year: 1990 to 1992 takes the YTX4L-BS and 1993 to 1995 the YTX7L-BS. For 1993 to 1995 that is the Dakota Lithium 12V 4.5Ah, the lithium drop-in for the YTX7L-BS case. The table above shows each run, so match your year to the case before you order.
Will a lithium battery work in a DR250S without changes?+
Yes, on a bike with a healthy charging system: the lithium battery uses the same case, the same posts and the same cables, and it drops in where the lead-acid battery sat. Bikes older than about 2000 should have their voltage regulator and rectifier checked first, since a failing one overcharges any battery and lithium tolerates it less. Fill any gap in the tray with the foam spacers most lithium dirt bike batteries include.
Do I need a different charger for a lithium dirt bike battery?+
Use a charger or maintainer with a lithium (LiFePO4) mode. A lead-acid trickle charger can push the wrong voltage profile, and a desulfation mode can damage a lithium pack. A lithium-profile maintainer over the off-season keeps it topped without harm, and the battery loses only a few percent of charge a month sitting on its own.
